Rug Terms You Need To Know

There are so many important factors to consider when it comes to choosing the right rug for your space. Understanding the different aspects of fiber qualities, weaves, constructions, and pile heights is crucial.

Whether you're looking for a washable, wool or natural fiber rug. Or not sure what pile length will work best for you. Our most commonly used rug term guide will help you identify what features you would like in your new rug!

We want to make choosing your rug for your home as easy as possible. Here are some of our most commonly used rug terms.

PILE:

Pile height in rugs refers to the length of the fibers from the surface of the rug to the backing. It is an important factor in determining the rug's texture, appearance, and suitability for different spaces. It can be short, medium, or long, affecting the rug's texture and feel. The pile height you choose depends on the level of comfort you desire, the location of the rug, and the amount of maintenance you're willing to undertake.

TRADITIONAL:

Inspired by classic designs that are rich with decorative detail. Often featuring a bordered pattern and centre medallion detail. Traditional rugs are valued for their timeless beauty and craftsmanship, making them a popular choice for adding a classic and elegant touch to any space.

HAND-KNOTTED:

Rugs that are hand-knotted by our skilled rug artisans. This is a traditional and labour-intensive process that results in a beautiful chunky woven rug. Hand-knotted rugs are highly prized for their beauty, craftsmanship, and durability, making them a popular choice for those looking to add a touch of luxury and tradition to their homes.

HIGH-LOW:

A high-low pile has both pile lengths which adds extra texture and dimension to the design. This technique adds visual interest and a tactile experience to the rug. High-low rugs are popular for their unique texture and ability to add dimension and interest to a room, making them both functional and decorative elements in home decor.

WASHABLE:

Easy-care fibers that can be easily spot-cleaned by hand, or popped in the washing machine for a deeper clean. Washable rugs are popular for high-traffic areas of the home such as hallways, entrance and living rooms. They're also a great choice for busy homes with kids or pets, or for those who just want the ease and convenience of being able to clean their rugs at home.

FLATWEAVE:

A rug that is woven without a pile results in a smooth flatweave surface that has no tufted texture. Flatweave rugs are made by weaving the warp and weft threads together on a loom. Unlike pile rugs, which have cut or looped fibers standing up from the base, flatweave rugs have a smooth, flat surface. They are a great option for high-traffic areas, or for going underneath moving furniture such as dining tables and chairs.

DISTRESSED:

The design consists of a blend of shades and colour variations to mimic the over-dyed look of authentic vintage rugs. This look is intentionally created to add character, charm, and a sense of history to the rug.

KID & PET-FRIENDLY:

Rugs that are specially designed with busy-homes in mind. The fibers are constructed to have unique features that make them more durable and easier to clean.
